SUMMARY:ECLC Opportunity: Staying Human in the Age of AI
DESCRIPTION:Who: All Essex County Educators\nWhat: Kickoff for 18-month Staying Human in the Age of AI learning series: Pedagogy: Accessibility and Equity with AI\nWhen: September 30 (in person)\nLearn more and register\n\nParticipants in this full 18-month learning series engage in sustained learning across three interconnected strands that examine how AI can be understood\, applied\, and evaluated in educational settings. \n\nCapacity Building and Technical Training: Participants will explore a range of AI tools that support professional practice\, including adult-facing applications and student-facing tools. The experience includes hands-on training\, opportunities to examine what tools currently exist and how they can be used effectively\, and workshops designed to prepare participants to serve as in-house trainers within their schools or districts. (Facilitated primarily by Day of AI)\nDevelopmental Implications: Participants will examine the intersection of AI with human and adolescent development. This strand explores the social\, emotional\, and relational implications of AI in schools\, including its impact on relationships\, learning environments\, and student well-being. (Facilitated by Mel Sellick)\nPedagogical Implications: Participants will consider when and how AI should—or should not—be used in the classroom. This strand focuses on making intentional\, student-centered pedagogical decisions based on learner needs and classroom contexts. Participants will explore how AI can enhance accessibility\, support universally designed learning environments\, and strengthen learner agency\, while also critically examining potential limitations and risks depending on the tools used and the students served. (Facilitated by Susan Shapiro)\n\nParticipants \nThis experience is intentionally designed for school-based teams to participate together\, though individual educators will also be welcome to the series. When leadership teams and educators learn as a group\, they build a shared understanding of the technology\, develop discernment about when and how AI should (and should not) be used\, and build real internal capacity for their home school/district. Participating teams will be well-positioned to bring their learning back to the school as an advisory group and as internal PD leaders on all things AI—supporting thoughtful\, consistent decision-making across classrooms. \nTime Commitment \nParticipants will be asked to partake in no more than one synchronous activity each month: either a workshop (virtual or in-person) within one of the content strands or a virtual PLC-style Community of Reflective Practice (CRP) to make meaning of the continued learning. Most workshops and CRPs will be tiered by grade spans (PK-5\, 6-8\, 9-12) to address the differing implications of the use of AI within each grade span. \nIncentives \nParticipants who complete the full series will be eligible for at least 30 PDPs. \nClick here to register and view the full calendar for the learning series.

Many educators around the state and nationally have committed themselves to supporting our most at-risk students by addressing this engagement gap. \nAt Power of Place\, we know that educators are at their best when they work and learn collaboratively. That’s why we are building the Mass AltEd Network – a new network by and for educators that will remain focused on alternative education in Massachusetts. \nWhether you work in an official alternative school or program or are simply working to ensure the best possible outcomes for students facing barriers to graduation\, please join us for our inaugural meeting. SUMMARY:Teacher Collaborative Co-Lab: From Culture to Classroom - A Culturally-Responsive Teaching Co-lab
DESCRIPTION:What: 5-part Co-Lab on Culturally Responsive Teaching\nWho: All Massachusetts teachers\nWhen: 10/15\, 10/22\, 10/29\, 11/5\, and 11/12\nWhere: 4:30-6 pm on Zoom\nRegister\n\nThis Co-Lab will be designed to support teachers in understanding and applying the practices of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT). Drawing from the work of Zaretta Hammond\, including Culturally Responsive Teaching & the Brain and her latest text\, Rebuilding Students’ Learning Power: Teaching for Instructional Equity and Cognitive Justice\, the Co-Lab is intended as an introduction\, refresher\, or practical space for teachers who are new to CRT or looking to deepen their practice. \nParticipating teachers will build a foundational understanding of CRT\, reflect on their own identities and experiences\, and consider how their instructional practices can create more equitable learning experiences for students. The program will consist of a series of five weekly 90-minute sessions\, where teachers will participate in interactive mini-lessons\, discussions with other teachers\, and work time. \nThe weekly sessions are designed to move from building the foundations of CRT and reflecting on identity\, to exploring culturally responsive practices through the Ready for Rigor framework\, examining how teacher actions and instructional choices can support more equitable learning experiences\, and applying these ideas to classroom practice. At the end of the Co-Lab\, teachers will have the opportunity to reflect on their learning\, share their experiences with peers\, and identify meaningful next steps to continue growing their practice. All Massachusetts teachers are welcome to participate.
